BRICK OVEN PIZZA & PASTA

Design Lead for Mobile App: October 2021 - February 2022

Project Goal and Target Audience

The Brick Oven Pizza is a local restaurant in the Orlando,
Florida area with three locations. Patrons can dine in,
but the restaurant would like to increase their carry-out
and delivery business. Many local competitors offer
similar apps and with the tourism in the area they think
it could help their business be successful. The target audience includes visitors to the area along with locals who are looking for a quick meal.

Project Overview

I began with paper wireframes to get a general sense of the main screens users would need to work with. Initially I started with a home screen with location information, and then a way to navigate to the menu or build a pizza screen.

I added stars for elements I wanted to carry into the digital wireframes, but learned through user research that some of those items might not be needed by the time I got to the high fidelity layouts.

Key Challenges and Constraints

Visiting tourists look for an easy meal after a busy day of sightseeing, and local families are often busy and want to save time instead of cooking after work.

The Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta app will make it easy for visitors and locals to order tasty italian cuisine for carry-out or delivery after a long and busy day.

LoFi Wireframes

Based on initial user studies, customers wanted to know what the specials were, so I made them the first item followed by the ordering button for those who want to jump to the menu.

Large Visual of Specials and other Promos for quick selection of offerings.

Large “Order Now” button so it’s easy to navigate right to the ordering process.

Included a message to let users know the item they selected was added.

The option to Modify the order or to add a new item was  included.

Usability Study Findings

1

Time & Accuracy
Busy tourists and working locals want a quick easy meal at the end of the day.

2

Ease of Use

The interface needs to be intuitive and easy to use, keeping accessibility in mind.

3

Payment

Ensuring secure and easy payment methods is important. Also, the ability to save payments for future orders will help with repeatability.

Initially, I included a login button or guest account for flexibility. Usability studies revealed that visitors wanted an option to create a new account early on in in the process and not just at the end of their order. I added a “Create New Account” button as one of the initial options.

Entering payment information was too complicated and there wasn’t a way to save the information for later. In addition, users wanted a way to add a different payment option if logged in with a default payment. I simplified the screen to have the default payment available for user accounts with an option to add a new payment method.

Accessibility Considerations

1

Color Contrast - I used WebAim to check the contrast of the colors I was using (background compared to text).

2

User Interface - Thought about multiple ways that a user could navigate between each screen in the sequence.

3

Motion - Made sure the motion on the screen made sense and wasn’t overwhelming or disruptive in terms of accessibility.

Project Takeaways

What I learned

I learned how important it is to conduct research and keep the user first experience in mind. It’s important to be aware of personal biases and to listen to others to gather information to make sure the app is easy for a diverse group of users to navigate through.

Next Steps

1

Conduct more usability studies to ensure we’re not overlooking any additional pain points.

2

Conduct usability studies to research adding ways to filter through the menu (i.e. Pizza, Pasta, Sides, Drinks) as well as options to filter by dietary needs.

3

Conduct additional usability studies to see if there are additional options needed.
